Occupational therapists are regulated healthcare professionals who work with children to help them overcome various challenges in everyday life. Occupational therapists focus on three main realms of functioning for children through active treatment and consultation to foster independence in the areas of self-care, productivity, and leisure:
- Self-care related functioning includes independence in feeding, getting dressed, toileting, and engaging in self-hygiene.
- Productivity in play – expanding the number of toys a child uses, increasing engagement in games and activities with other children and adults.
- Productivity in school-related activities includes holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, forming letters, drawing, typing.
- Leisure – participation in community activities, such as sports.
Our Occupational Therapists enable children to become more independent by improving their fine motor skills, gross motor skills, visual motor skills (such as eye-hand coordination), self-regulation (remaining calm and attentive), and adherence to routines (using visuals and social stories) through fun, functional everyday activities specifically designed to meet your child where they are at, developmentally.
